CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (AUGUST 17, 2021) — Some of the best architecture from 35 nations by today’s foremost practices is revealed as The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design announces the winners of The International Architecture Awards for 2021, celebrating buildings and landscapes to have been completed across the world between 2019 and 2021.
A new Apple Store in Singapore by Foster + Partners, a new residential high-rise in Spain by Pininfarina SpA., a sports arena in Germany by Behnisch Architekten, a new university building in New York by Rafael Viñoly Architects, a collection of new skyscrapers by Kohn Pedersen Fox in Shanghai, New York, Singapore, and Bangkok, a new financial center in Guangdong by Aedas, a dynamic new museum renovated from an old blast furnace by CCTN Architectural Design Co. Ltd., an adaptive-reuse of a Berlin apartment complex by Tchoban Voss Architekten GmbH, a new mosque in Algiers by KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten, an urban park in Qatar by AECOM, a new airport in Singapore by Safdie Architects, charging stations by GRAFT, student housing in Miami by Arquitectonica, a deconstructed retail store in China by Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), a new London performance space for ballet by Glenn Howells Architects, and new transportation centers by Grimshaw Architects, ASPECT, Woods Bagot, and John McAslan and Partners head the list of awarded projects for 2021.
Organized by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the 2021 International Architecture Awards are the world’s oldest and most prestigious global architecture awards for the world’s best new buildings and urban planning projects from over 35 nations.
Founded in 2005, these Awards for International Excellence demonstrate how buildings and urban planning projects worldwide stretch the boundaries of architecture, irrespective of style, complexity, and size of both scheme and budget.

For 2021, a 400-strong shortlist had been selected from over 800 entries from 46 countries ranging from China and Canada to México, Singapore, and the UAE.
Entries included new housing, offices, transport, health and schools to civic and community, sports, religion, libraries, private homes, culture, and production energy and preservation, recycling, renovation, with entries representing the most beautiful and evocative to the most innovative in contemporary architecture.

This elite group of buildings and urban planning projects selected by the jury will be premiered in an exhibition at Contemporary Space Athens (74 Mitropoleos Str., GR-105 63 Athens, Greece) opening September 10 and continuing through October 2021.
The exhibition is entitled "The City and the World" and is scheduled to travel in Europe through 2022.
The official Awards Presentation takes place at a Gala Awards Dinner and Ceremony adjacent to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece next September 10.
